April 1: April Fools' Day

There is a lot of discussion on the appropriateness of pulling April Fools' pranks and jokes this year amid the COVID-19 crisis. Google has decided to pull their legendary pranks. Google will “take the year off from that tradition out of respect for all those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one,” said Google's marketing director.

Yes, I believe this year we need to be mindful of the jokes and NOT make them associated with the COVID-19 crisis we are facing.  I do believe inside your own home, you can have fun good, clean April Fools' fun with your family. Yes, we are in a crisis, but laughter is the best form of medicine.  It's important we are teaching our children valuable lessons through a crisis.  In the right context, you can do April Fools' and be mindful of the pandemic.

Here's an article with fun and COVID-19 sensitive ideas.

April 2: Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

Grace and I laughed at this one.  We have literally had the same loaf of white bread in our fridge for two weeks, fearful when we may get another loaf.  My kids will ONLY eat PB&J sandwiches on white loaf bread, so I told them to use it sparingly. Just to note I did find a second loaf this past week at the grocery store. Grace picked out a couple of fun things to add to your traditional PB&J but also some fun twists to the peanut butter and jelly combination!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Cookies

Peanut Butter & Jelly Tacos

Peanut Butter & Jelly Energy Bites

Peanut Butter & Jelly Cups

Mix-ins to the Traditional PB&J Sandwich- from marshmallow fluff to siracha, have some fun and try one of these mix-ins

April 3: National Rainbow Day

Across the nation, people have put rainbows in their home windows to show their love and kindness during the COVID-19 crisis.  I like to think of it as a reminder of God's promise to always protect us. A symbol of hope and kindness. Chase the Rainbow is a wonderful Facebook group community with ideas and encouragement using rainbows.  I know you have a Pinterest pin with a rainbow craft! I searched my pins and found a dozen or so!

April 4: Easter

I think this is when the restrictions of COVID-19 will hit the hardest. Usually my event calendar is jam-packed with community egg hunts and all that has changed. Many cities are moving to a virtual egg hunt this year. Many churches will be streaming services as they are now or may offer a drive-in church opportunity. So much can change between now and Easter Sunday.  Check out Macaroni Kid Tri-Cities newsletter and social media has Easter opportunities in our community to come up that are virtual in nature and some fun at-home Easter ideas!

April 4: National School Librarian Day

Do you know who your child's school librarian is?  They are often one of the unsung heroes in our schools. We take for granted the work that goes into maintaining and growing a school's library.  There are still ways to say "Thank You" to your kid's librarian even though they are not in school. If you know who they are, see if they are on social media and let your kid do a quick thank you message by video and post it or just simply send them a message.  If you don't know, try visiting your school's website for their name and maybe even email.

April 7: World Health Day

April 7, 2020 is the day to celebrate the work of nurses and midwives and remind world leaders of the critical role they play in keeping the world healthy. Nurses and other health workers are at the forefront of COVID-19 response - providing high quality, respectful treatment and care, leading community dialogue to address fears and questions and, in some instances,  collecting data for clinical studies. Quite simply, without nurses, there would be no response.  I have seen so many beautiful "thank yous" to our health care workers.

April 8: National Zoo Lovers Day

You may not be able to visit your local zoo, but many zoos are going virtual!

Knoxville Zoo

Cincinnati Zoo

Houston Zoo

Shedd Aquarium

San Diego Zoo

April 9: National Unicorn Day

Are you kids part of the unicorn-hype?!  From coloring sheets to cupcakes to toilet paper tube crafts, Pinterest has a little bit of everything when it comes to unicorns!  Don't be afraid to use glitter and sprinkles on this one. I might, if we can go outside!

Cardboard Tube Unicorn- I've been saving my toilet paper tubes for a reason!

April 10: National Siblings Day

With social distancing, celebrating this one may be a little emotional this year.  You could post your favorite sibling photo of all of you to social media with a special message to your siblings. Take the time to video chat or call (no texting) your siblings!  By April 10, my kids probably will want nothing to do with each other after being quarantined for a month!

April 11: National Pet Day

So many ways to celebrate national pet day. You could easily post a pic of your pet and you on social media. Why not give your pet a spa day at home! Watch a pet movie together, but not Marley and Me (it makes me cry every time, but my kids love that movie)! Have a pet photo/video shoot. During COVID-19, visits to your local animal shelter has been limited, but visit your local shelter's Facebook Page and give them some love. There are so many animals out there who so desperately want to be someone's pet!

You could also make homemade treats! PLEASE make sure you are double checking your ingredients and that they are animal-friendly!  Here's a simple recipe for Peanut Butter treats!

April 12: National for Twelves Day

A day to celebrate the #12 or things that come in a dozen (12).  From doughnuts to eggs, be on the lookout for anything #12.

April 14: National Peach Cobbler Day

I love this super easy cobbler recipe.  Just add your favorite fruit!

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups fresh fruit
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Ground cinnamon

Directions

  1.  Melt butter in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish.
  2.  Combine flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt; add milk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour batter over butter (do not stir).
  3. Bring remaining 1 cup sugar, peach slices, and lemon juice to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly; pour over batter (do not stir). Sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired.
  4. Bake at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve cobbler warm or cool.

April 14: National Gardening Day

What a great way to #shoplocal on this day.  Many of our local nurseries are still offering online ordering and curbside pick-up. May be a great time to plant some herbs or vegetables. May be a great day to plant a flower to remember this time and season of our lives.  We have done that as an extended family for years. My grandmother gave me a peace lily to plant and I know I will remember it was from her during this season.

April 15: Titanic Remembrance Day

No surprise, my daughter Grace, the Titaniac included this day! She loves anything Titanic. We have been to the Pigeon Forge museum twice and she is so looking forward to see the violin on display (hopefully in the near future). We finally finished her Titanic photo mosaic puzzle.  Maybe I can talk my husband in watching the movie Titanic on this day!

April 17: Husband Appreciation Day

Doesn't have to be a grand gesture, just show the hubs some love and appreciation today!  Could be a simple card, act of kindness, or homemade dinner!

April 22: National Earth Day

Check out our article in the newsletter for several ways your entire family can celebrate!

April 23: National Picnic Day

If the weather is great, pack an easy-fix picnic meal and head outdoors to your local park.  If it's raining set up dinner on the floor!  Just have fun!
