Food to Crafts

In 2015, Americans spent an average of about $200 on Memorial Day weekend on food, drink and shopping, according to a Goodshop survey. With gas prices on the rise, it is important to be budget-savvy this holiday season. To avoid breaking your budget this year, here are several inexpensive and awesome ways to have fun on Memorial Day 2022 — all for under $50.

1.
Start the day off right with spangled waffles and a patriotic smoothie.

2. Take an afternoon break with a glass of Southern-style strawberry tea.

3. Do your barbecue right! This site has a ton of recipes for any taste bud from burgers, wings, corn on the cob, salads, and desserts!

4. Do a fun craft with the kiddos to help teach them the importance of Memorial Day with this beautiful and easy American flag suncatcher.

5. Go on a camping trip. Pack inexpensive foods like hot dogs, bread, beans and granola bars and enjoy free outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming and fishing.

6. Enjoy your Local Park. Take the family to a park for some fun — and free — activities. Load up the picnic basket and grab a blanket — and don’t forget to bring a kite, frisbee, soccer ball and more to keep everyone active and having fun outdoors. The Tri-Cities area has wonderful municipal and state parks.

7. Enjoy a day trip of local attractions. A stay-cation is a great idea on a holiday such as Memorial Day. Visit local attractions you and your family sometimes do not have time to visit. Stop by the Veterans Home National Cemetery in Johnson City and explain the meaning behind each flag at each grave.

8. Make Memorial Day Movie Day. Sure, you can go to the theater to see a movie and get snacks for under $30, but you can see a whole lot more for your money if you plan an in-home movie day. Stock up on your favorite candy and get a few Redbox rentals. Since renting from Redbox costs just $2 or less, you can spend more money on snacks — and maybe even some pizza delivery.

9.  Let Groupon Be Your Guide. Groupon has many promotions ranging from massage packages to go-kart racing and many of the offers are deeply discounted. So, depending what your interests are, you might be able to squeeze multiple activities into your budget this Memorial Day Weekend.

You don't have to break the bank to have a great Memorial Day weekend with your family. Get creative, think outside the box, do something different, but most of all have FUN!
