Note from the Publisher-Happy Memorial Day

May 25, 2016
Whew...did you miss your Macaroni Kid last week?  I was experiencing MAYcember to my eyeballs these past two weeks! My kids wrapped up their school year this past Tuesday and hopefully baseball for Jackson will wrap up next week.  There is so much AmaZing things going on in our local communities over this Memorial Day weekend into next weekend!  Run for the Veterans is tonight, Free Fishing Days are over the course of the next two weekends for Tennessee and Virginia, and Vacation Bible Schools (VBS) start next week! You can find all of these events in our AmaZinG event calendar. Do you know of an event I may have missed...message me and let me know at amandah@macaronikid.com. Need some MAYcember laughs, check out the hilarious Holderness Family in their new video!

Many of us are gearing up for our upcoming three-day weekend. Memorial Day endures as a holiday which most businesses observe because it marks the unofficial beginning of summer. How many of us view it as an opportunity to barbecue, watch a new blockbuster at the theater, or head to the lake?  Memorial Day is so much more than all of those things.  Take the time this weekend and especially on Monday to talk to your kids about the true meaning behind Memorial Day. I have added some great articles on family activities, crafts, recipes, and much more to celebrate the holiday.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868.Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.  It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971.
Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country:
- Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in war
- Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon.
- Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines.
- Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.
- March in a parade.

I hope each of you has a safe, fun, and memorable Memorial Day!
